Aw Shucks Field Trip

Last week, or maybe it was the week before last already (!), Joseph's school had a field trip to Aw Shucks Farm for all the three, four year old and T-K classes. Parents went too. They had some animals: turkeys, sheep, goats, pig, chickens, horse. It is not a "real" farm , so the animals are just in small pens for observing, but it was fun to see them up close. There is also a corn maze (I think this is the main attraction, hence the name Aw Shucks), a tree house, a tractor ride, a little pumpkin patch, a pond, a short nature trail, a hay "mountain," a tree house... All the kids had a lot of fun exploring and experiencing each part of the farm. And we had a beautiful warm sunny day for it.

There was also a short presentation for everyone about the farm and corn in particular. The woman spoke about how corn is grown and harvested, and also about all the different things that are made with corn. She showed some paper, a plastic mug, some paint, etc stating that all of them were made with corn. She said that corn is in 4000 different products. I actually thought that actually sounded like an astonishingly low number. Then she told the children that there was probably some corn in what they were eating for lunch and they should look on their juice boxes or their chips or their cookies for the word "corn." (I'm thinking, "yeah, surrounded by the words "high fructose" and "syrup!") Although, it wasn't in what the kids next to me were drinking since they don't put those types of things in diet soda!!

I got to see first hand how much Joseph likes his teacher, Miss Kelly. At one point, I needed to use the bathroom so I asked Miss Kelly to keep her eye on Joseph for me. From that moment onward, Joseph held Miss Kelly's hand everywhere we went. It seems that all the boys in the class are quite fond of her and if ever she wasn't around they were immediately asking, "Where's Miss Kelly?...Where did Miss Kelly go?"

An obligatory tractor shot.
